In Paris, free beach experiences are brought to life each summer by the annual event known as Paris Plages. Established in 2002, Paris Plages transforms various parts of the city into temporary beach resorts, offering Parisians and tourists a unique way to enjoy the summer without leaving the city.

The two main locations for Paris Plages are:

  1. The Banks of the Seine (Parc Rives de Seine):
    • Activities: Visitors can relax on deck chairs under sun umbrellas, enjoy water misters, and participate in activities like pétanque, table football, and Tai Chi. There are also open-air exhibitions and sports classes.
    • Amenities: The area features palm trees, cool lawns, and cultural activities. There are also loaned books and comic books from off-site libraries for those who enjoy reading by the river
  2. La Villette Canal Basin:
    • Activities: This location offers a more relaxed vibe with swimming pools of varying depths, suitable for both children and adults. Visitors can enjoy water sports such as kayaking, canoeing, and stand-up paddleboarding. There are also beach huts, showers, and toilets available.
    • Family-friendly options: The area includes a pirate-themed playground, zip lines, and a beach club with various play structures for children

In 2024, in addition to the usual activities, Paris Plages will be integrated with events related to the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games. This year, the Terrasse des Jeux at Hôtel de Ville will serve as a central hub for Olympic celebrations, including viewing areas for the Olympic Torch Relay, the elite marathons, and various free public competitions

Overall, Paris Plages provides an excellent opportunity to enjoy beach-like experiences and various recreational activities right in the heart of Paris, all free of charge.
